Coming from Piazza Marconi, you will come across a small square full of flowers, overlooking the Scala Tonda (round staircase) - it’s impossible not to stop to take a picture!
The Scala Tonda is probably one of Pieve di Tremosine sul Garda's most beloved and most famous views. This is the entrance to the home of the famous Arturo Cozzaglio, the only staircase in the whole municipality to have such a peculiar shape.
The unusual shape gave Cozzaglio the nickname ‘Arturo de la scala tónda’ (Arturo of the round staircase). Cozzaglio loved this nickname, and that he was happy to use it instead of his surname.
The house at number 7 of the Via della Scala Tonda is very simple, but it still preserves the original structure of the era. Fixtures and furniture have not changed at all since when Arturo Cozzaglio lived there, between the 19th and early 20th century.
In addition to the staircase you can also admire the old seat of the municipality of Tremosine sul Garda. The house always belonged to the Cozzaglio family, who gave it to the municipality in exchange for another house, overlooking the main square.
Cozzaglio dedicated his entire life to Tremosine sul Garda. He studied and lived around Brescia, where he worked as a teacher and where he carried out his scientific studies.
A lover of engineering and sciences, he obtained the diploma of surveyor and participated both as a designer and as a builder in several projects, dedicated to the redevelopment and modernization of his home region.
A curious fact about Cozzaglio? During his career he became interested in geology and studied the morphology of Lake Garda throughout his life.
Thanks to this passion, he participated in numerous international conferences presenting new theories inspired by his engineering studies.
