The history of Campione dates back to several centuries ago - the town was known for its paper mills, forges, and mills as early as the 16th century, but it was only in 1896, with the opening of the cotton mill, that Campione reached the peak of its success. Industry in Campione lasted until the late 1970s, when the paper mill was closed.
